HISTORY | Chapel On The Dunes
A piece of Port Aransas history above the sand
Built in 1937-1938 for Aline B. Carter, the Chapel on the Dunes is Mustang Island's oldest consecrated church and one of Port Aransas' most distinctive historic landmarks.
Carter was an author, artist, astronomy teacher and Texas Poet Laureate. The chapel's quiet white exterior later gained a colorful surprise: biblical murals painted inside by artist John Patrick Cobb.
The chapel remains owned by the Carter family, with guided visits coordinated through the Port Aransas Museum. Check the museum's current tour information before visiting.
This is one of those local treasures that reminds you how much history can be tucked into a very small place.
